Dear Reader,
Through the frigid bars,
I can see you.
The metal beams hold
nothing back,
but a touch.
When you grasp my hand,
I feel everything at once.
Golden, faithful contact
of years lost -
tattered betrayal.
Standing on a pedestal
the false admission
escaped your mouth,
three words still ringing
in my ears.
A trap of rite, contrite.
("He did it.")
Agony swam in my eyes,
when your legs came into view.
Sitting up I saw a face
of old delight,
now a new one in my mind.
Silence filled a quiet room,
as you struggled
to meet my eyes.
Ragged remorse came in time,
but you left, eventually,
without the key.
Tottered heels vanished
in a haze of trite.
Your face still vivid in my mind,
cold lies, blue eyes,
red lips, tired quips.
("I'm sorry.")
I thought I had struck
the shiny rock of regret,
but you came,
and now, I know.
It was Fool's Gold.
Sincerely,
Your Prisoner
