“THAT’S IT!” She hears a man’s voice bellow. The girl trembles.
“Please spare Sashimi,” A woman’s voice pleads. The girl’s head turns to the sound of her name.
“Oh please!” the man replies, “She’s next!” The girl knows she needs to make a run for it. She unsteadily stands up. Her head just barely reaches the table length, she’s safe. For now. She runs to the open door. As she runs out, she can hear the sirens coming from the outside. The loud bellowing from the sirens makes her tremble. The streets of the small town are full of cars and noises. She sees the other houses and they all look the same. The first thought she has is, “I need to get as far away as I can.” She runs. She runs as fast as her little legs can carry her and as far as she will be able to go. She stumbles and falls on the sidewalk. She cheek begins to lightly bleed. She looks up and a woman holding the hand of another small child.
“Oh! Are you okay?” the woman asks.
“Y-yes,” Sashimi replies shakily standing up.
Sashimi walks down the street where she lives. Head buried in a book. Red T-shirt, blue jeans, sunglasses on her head, black boots, and hair tied in a braid. A book about the adventures of amazing heroes and fantasy that could never happen. She walks by everything unknowing of what she passes, but knowing where she is going. She makes a few more turns until she comes to her house. She hears something and is able to tear her eyes from her book and look up. Up head are a few boys. They are mocking and teasing another boy. Sashimi slams her book closed. She never could tolerate bullying. She puts the book back in her bag and walks up to them.
“I don’t have anything to give you. Just leave me alone,” The boy says trying to sound more confident than he really is.
“Well, everyone has something. Besides, if we see you in school, we can take other things from you,” One of the bullies taunts.
“Yeah, there are some things in bookbags. Maybe dark secrets…” Another continues the taunt.
“Why do you lay off and hit the road!” Sashimi yells over.
“Ooooh, you need your little girlfriend to protect you,” the first bully says.
“I’m not his girlfriend. Just someone who has common sense, unlike you idiots,” Sashimi retorts.
“Oh, and what will you do?”
“Do you know who my father is?” Sashimi interrogates, “the one from 9 years ago. The one who made it very clear that he couldn’t be messed with or else. So I tell you again, lay off and hit the road.”
The boys exchange glances, “Really? You’re Sasha. The nerdy police officer’s kid, not that man.”
“Oh, that’s by adoption. If you listened, he had a wife and child. I was that child. The wife is no longer around,” Sashimi’s voice slightly cracks at the end.
“Oh, cry over old dead mommy!” they yell in excitement. Sashimi had had enough and slaps the first one hard enough he falls to the ground.
“Now, hit the road,” The boys don’t hesitate and run off in the opposite direction.
“Thanks,” The one boy says.
“No problem. Ted and Tommy are jerks anyway,”
“So you’re Sasha?”
“My full name is Sashimi, but that’s my nickname. Who are you? I’ve never seen you around before,”
“Oh, I’m the new kid. Name’s Oliver, but most people call me Ollie,”
“Well, nice to meet you, Ollie. Don’t get into any trouble, my father’s a cop,” With that, Sasha runs away towards her house, missing Oliver’s friendly smirk.
