The food in the fridge was confused and scared, for they had gotten the first case of ‘it’. A few days after the humans left, a slice of cheese had presented himself with a green substance that grew across its square appearance.
“I don’t know what it is!” he had coughed. All the food had backed away, all except the milk, who studied the odd substance closely.
“It seems you have a sickness that I’ve never seen before…” the milk stated, “I want everyone to stay away from this slice of cheese, and I want him to isolate himself.”
Everyone obeyed the milk but a few other slices of cheese, who later presented themselves with the same green look in the same spots.
“This is disastrous. We must alert the food in the pantry,” the milk exclaimed. So, a few raspberries made their way to the pantry across the kitchen.
“Friends!” They cried, “There has been an unfortunate event in the refrigerator! A few slices of cheese have contracted a disease, which causes a substance to grow across their bodies! Please stay safe and try to stop this from happening, because from our calculations it spreads! Thank you!’
“Pah!” The chips called. The chips were preeminent food of the pantry. “It's all nonsense! Do not believe them citizens! It is a hoax and is NOT something we should fear. Please, carry on with your lives and ignore this!” The pantry foods were uneasy, but started to disperse.
“It could be fatal! Please, listen to us!” The raspberries pleaded and pleaded, but the chips pushed them away and out of the pantry. He turned around and could see the weariness of the pantry foods faces, and reassured them,
“Please, trust me. I have acute senses, and I would warn you if I knew that there was a deadly disease, and trust me, this is not one of them. You will all be fine!” Around half of the foods cheered at his speech, but others were still skeptical. They didn't think much of it, though, so everyone left nonchalantly.
Just a day later a cookie cried out in agony, appearing to have the same green spots across its body. Everyone looked at the chips for answers, “I assure you no fear! It will go away eventually, and no one will be affected,” he declared. By now, the foods that had been skeptic before had heard enough.
“You heard the raspberries. It could be fatal, and it spreads. I think we should all ask the mints.” The cereal stated. The mints were in charge of all disasters that happened in the kitchen.
“The chips know what they're doing! He's your leader!” The crackers retorted.
“The chips know nothing!” Another cookie called. A huge uproar started, a ‘food fight’ if you will.
The chips tried to end the conflict, “Citizens! I will ask the mints for your reassurance. I just KNOW that they will say that everything is fine. I-” the chips were cut off by (speak of the devil) the mints.
“Everyone listen up! What I am about today is at the utmost importance!” They demanded. “The disease you have heard of is now being declared a national kitchen emergency! Everyone must wear a piece of tissue on their face when they leave their boxes and container, and you are pleaded to stay there! We do not want any more of these cases, and we hope you understand, for the sake of the kitchen. Thank you very much and stay safe!” All of the foods were scared, and they rushed into their homes and stayed there.
Even though it seemed that they were all being completely idle and staying inside, more and more of these cases kept showing up, and apparently, a few foods even had to be thrown out. The chips said that he would try to get the foods out of their homes and back outside, but the chances were very slim. After about a week, The chips announced that he had been consulting with the mints, and that the foods could go outside and live their lives again. But, the minds had also said they had to wear a face cover when they went out, and they had to stay a certain amount apart. Half of the foods agreed, but the other half was almost appalled. They started to riot, and talked about how they had a say in what they did with their bodies.
For days the food fought and fought, with absolutely no outcome. The cases of the disease were rising, and it seemed that no one could get along. The kitchen was divided entirely, and everything was just a mess. At this point, tons of food would have to get thrown away because of the horrid event.
All while this was happening, foods were partying without the face covering they should wear, and completely disobeying everything the mints had said. The chips were completely out of control as well, holding big rallies for campaigning with no face covering in sight. Every one he hosted was just a sea of parasitic disease waiting to happen. He would call the disease the ‘fridge virus’ just because it originated in the refrigerator. The opposing half of the chips were trying to advocate that a face covering must be worn, and to stop being so close to each other as to not spread anything.
The kitchen was a disaster. It seemed as if it were a big Roman battle arena. Every food was a gladiator, fighting for their lives, and in some cases, their rights as a food. Everyone had come to the conclusion that it would never end, that everything would just continue to go wrong.
That one day, two weeks after they left, the humans returned. Immediately, when they walked in, they could smell something horrible, something that smelled rotten, or like disease.
“Oh my gosh,” the oldest girl said, “That smells absolutely horrible.”
“It absolutely does,” the mom uttered, with her face all scrunched up, the wrinkles that were already there more defined, “Dan, look at the fridge. It's open slightly. Open it all the way.”
Her husband walked over and slowly wrapped his bony fingers around the metal handle.
“Go ahead, open it,” His son spoke. He pulled on the door, unleashing a treacherous smell, and a vision of decaying food.
“Ewwwww,” the Robertson family said all at once.
“Mom, check this out!” The youngest son called. The mother of the four children walked over, just to look at an even more decayed pantry.
“Oh good heavens,” she cried, ”Well, let's throw everything out, I guess.”
So, the Robertson family threw every single piece of food out. As they were falling into the trash bag, each and every piece of food wondered what they could've done to prevent it.
