The bus rocked back and forth making the young girls inside knock into each other, among these girls was 15 year old Malala. Suddenly, the bus stopped almost making the girls fall off their benches. A tall, bearded man walked into the bus and yelled,"Which one of you is Malala?" No one said a word, but a few girls looked her way. The man fired three shots, these bullets would spread her fame from Pakistan, to the entire world.
Malala was born on July 12, 1997. Even though the birth of a girl wasn't as widely celebrated, it made her father more determined to give her a better education. Her father ran a learning institution so school was a large part of her family. Her father said that when she was little she would waddle into the classroom and pretend that she was the teacher.
In 2007 the Taliban (a group of religious extremists or terrorists) took over the Swat Valley where she lived. They banned things like music and tv, and they also banned girls from going to school.
So in 2009 Malala started a blog. She wrote about what life was like under taliban control and how she feared war. This blog (written in Urdu under BBC) made her famous around Pakistan, but a target too.
On October 9, 2012, Malala was on her way home when a Talib stopped the bus. He yelled, "Which one of you is Malala?", when a few girls looked her way he fired three shots. One lodged in her shoulder, the other entered and exited her head. She was airlifted to a military hospital in Pakistan, then moved to Birmingham, England. Miraculously, she fully recovered and finally go to return to school. On her 16th birthday she got to speak in front of the UN. Not long after her speech she published her autobiography, "I am Malala.". But her greatest honor yet was the Nobel Peace Prize. She earned it when she was 17, that makes her the youngest person in history to earn ne. With the money she won she created, the Malala Fund, an organization that helps girls across the world get an education.
If you want to learn more about Malala the best way is to read her autobiography, "I am Malala.", but if you want a shorter one you can go to the Malala Fund's website or the Nobel Peace Prize website.
Even though Malala was able to return to school millions of girls across the world lack a proper education, and most lack education at all. in Afghanistan for example, 3.5 million children in Afghanistan don't have an education, and 85% of them, are girls. If you want to help this cause donate to the Malala fund and other charities like it, because the littlest donations can make a huge difference.
