Bonjour! Now, one of the most important aspects of learning a language is comprehension. You need to be able to understand what someone is saying before you can be able to even answer back. You may think that you are not able to watch an entire movie in another language, or maybe you believe that you'll never find any music you like in that language, but I'm here to tell you that you will. When I was at a lower French level, I had the chance to talk to a family from France. I asked them what the best thing I could do was to improve my French without being able to be immersed in the French language. Their advice was to watch movies! After that, I found one movie that I really liked, and I watched it every week in French. That was maybe a bit extreme, but every week I found that I could understand more and more of the movie! A good way to watch movies as a beginner is to start with subtitles (preferably in your new language), but you should take them away as soon as possible, to really try to comprehend. I have found that if you're struggling, it's good to pick a movie that you know very well already, so I love to watch Disney movies in French. It may seem a waste of time to watch a movie in a language you don't know yet, but not only will it improve your comprehension, your pronunciation will also improve from listening to native speakers. Now, you know what you should do, so go watch a movie!
Bonjour! I haven't posted anything since quarantine, but since school just started I thought that I would start posting again! I wanted to talk more about a topic that is very important to me, learning a language seriously on your own as a teenager! I've been taking French in school since I was little, but I've been serious about the language for around 3 years now. In that time, I've grown so much as a French speaker and I'm now at about a B1 or B2 level. I've had many experiences that have changed how I've gone about learning the language inside and outside of school, and I thought I would do a series of posts highlighting how I've been able to learn so much French, when there are so few resources as a young, middle-class teenager in an English speaking area. I'll be posting ever Sunday, so check back to learn more about my journey and how I hope to continue to study! À tout à l'heure!
