“Now today you will learn how to get off of the ground and to catch the wind drifts,” the instructor said. I looked over at Ilak. She looked nervous- very nervous. She was actually shaking. I then looked at Ariak. She looked very confident.
“Now any volunteers to try first?” The instructor asked us. I raised my hand.
“Norffas you want to go first?” The instructor asked me.
“No. It’s a question,” I started. I saw all eyes on me, “ Aren’t you going to show us how to do it first?” I asked. He laughed. I gulped. I looked back at Ilak. She looked even more nervous and she was looking right in my eyes. Her eyes read “SAVE ME NOW OR I’LL DIE”.
“ But I'll go first,” I quickly said
“ Round of applause for Norffas,” The instructor said while clapping. The other students were clapping along with the instructor. I looked at Ilak. She was clapping the hardest. I then looked at Ariak. She was looking at me with a cold stare. She was clapping very slowly that it didn’t make a sound. I was very happy at that moment. I didn’t make a fool of myself and I was already at the top.
“ Go sit wherever you want,” The instructor told me. I walked over to Ilak.
“ So, how’d I do?” I whispered to her as the instructor asked others to try.
“ You were amazing! How you were able to face your fear and get carried by the wind. And then beat your wings back to where we were. Not a smooth landing, but you did it. Overall it was amazing,”Ilak whispered back excitedly.
“ Ilak would you like to go next?” The instructor asked her.
“ What? Um, sure,” She answered.
“ Remember, the fear of yourself is a racer’s worst enemy. Got that from my dad. Good luck. Just relax,” I told her. She nodded in return. I looked over the edge as she jumped. She started to open her wings but then closed them. Why did she pull her wings back? I thought. I looked at her and then noticed that she had passed out.
“ She passed out,” I whispered to myself. I looked at her very hard. Then all of a sudden she was lifting up into the air. I looked away from her. I then looked back and she was falling again. I did this a couple of times. It seemed that me imagining her being lifted into the air was making her do exactly that. I imagined her opening her wings and flying over to us. She opened her wings and beat her wings. She flew over to us. I felt relieved that she was safe and on solid ground. She woke up. Her eyes bolted open. She looked at us. She then slowly got up and walked over to where I was sitting.
“ Who’s next?” The instructor asked. I saw Ariak get up. she walked to the edge and jumped. She opened her wings and glided back to us. She landed on her feet. She walked back over to her spot.
“ Well done Ariak. You are at the top of the rankings now. The ranking board will be put up at 5:00 tonight,” The instructor said, “You are all dismissed.”
“ What happened when I jumped?” Ilak asked me.
“ You passed out and you were falling down,” I answered. Ilak widened her eyes.
“ But, how did I end up on the…” She stopped talking.
“ What is it?” I asked her.
“ Do you know who he is?” Ilak said. I looked where she was pointing. I widened my eyes. She was pointing at a picture of a boy.Why does he look so much like me? I thought. The boy had red hair, golden eyes, but not any golden eyes, my father’s golden eyes. I looked at the photo. I found a name. In Memory of Zurc The Title read.
“ Let’s go back to the dorm,” I told Ilak. She nodded in response.
